Nauriz Festival and Nomad Family Stay, 8 Days
Nauryz is the day of the vernal equinox, and marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day, depending on where it is observed. The moment the sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year and it marks the beginning of a new year.
For Kazakhs in Mongolia it is holiday of family gathering, visiting old friends and flashing with their colorful traditional clothes. There will be special program of traditional practices and nomadic lifestyle in Ulgii due to Nauryz Festival.
You would get a chance to enjoy horse racing, traditional parade at the central square of Ulgii, Mongolian wrestling, traditional concert shows.
You can visit local Kazakh families for Naurzy koje or Nauryz Soup, rice soup made of 7 ingredients specially for these days.
This tour would offer you the chance to experience Kazakh traditions and stay with Nomad and Eagle Hunter's Families to learn more abour the nomadic lifestyle and Eagles.
Day 1, March 17, Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
You will be met by our driver/guide at Chinggis Khan airport and transferred to your hotel. Overnight in hotel.
Day 2, March 18th, Fly to Ulgii
Early breakfast in hotel and transfer to Chinggis Khan airport prior to domestic flight to Ulgii. You will be met by local driver and guide at the Ulgii airport. Have a tea break at your host family in Ulgii and head to an Eagle Hunter's Family out of town. Driving would take 3-4 hours. Lunch with the Nomad family.
The rest of the day is free for any activity such as hiking or wandering around out in the nature.
Day 3, March 19th, Family stay and day hike to Tsambagarav Mountain
Today we do day hiking to Tsambagarav Mountain, Tsambagarav is a mountain between Khovd Province and Bayan-Olgii Province in western Mongolia, it is a mountain of the Altai Mountains range. It has two peaks, its highest peak "Tsast Uul" ("Snow-covered peak") has an elevation of 4,193 metres (13,757 ft) and another peak same named "Tsambagarav" (48.655196,90.847063). The mountain is the stand-alone eternally snow-capped mountain of the Mongol Altai and the regional sacred mountain in Mongolia. (Source: wikipedia). Dinner and stay overnight with the family.
Day 4, March 20th, Eagle Hunter's Family
Today we leave the nomad family who live next to Tsambagav Mountain and head to an Eagle Hunter's Family. Stay with the Eagle Hunter's Family and learn about training and taking care of an Eagle. Horse riding and hunting practice on horseback with an Eagle. Stay overnight with the Eagle Hunter's Family.
Day 5, March 21st, Drive back to Ulgii
We spend the first half of the day with the Eagle hunter's Family and drive back to Ulgii after lunch. Visit local museum and bazaar. Visit Friendship Hill from where you can see and take a photo of ulgii town from the top. Stay in overnight in hotel.
Day 6, March 22nd, Nauryz Celebration
Today is an official Nauryz celebration day. Enjoy the opneing parade at the central square of Ulgii and visit gers specially set up due to Festival at the square. It is a great chance to see everyone wearing their traditional costumes and preparing rice soup at homes. After the ceremony at the square, visit some local families for Nauryz koje (soup) as the locals do. Enjoy traditional food. Stay overnight in hotel.
Day 7, March 23rd, Fly back to Ulaanbaatar
Early morning breakfast and fly back to Ulaanbaatar. You will be picked up from the airport and transferred to a hotel. This day is fully yours and you are free to explore the city on your own by getting city map and directions from us. Or you can have a city guide ( let us know in advance) to help you to explore the city. Stay overnight in hotel.
Day 8, March 24th, International departure.
You will be transferred to the airport prior to your international departure.
