Brief description

This tour has been tailored as a mix of hiking, non-technical-climbing, horse riding and getting to know the nomad lifestyle. On the top of Malchin peak, you would be able to glance into Russian and Chinese Altai Mountain ranges. Altai Tavan Bogds mountains, therefore, as an intersection of the border points of three countries, Mongolia, Russia and China called as a golden triangle. Potanin glacier stretches along on the edges of the Tavan Bogd Mountain peaks for about 19 km. 


Detailed itinerary

Day - 1

Day 1, Arrive in Ulgii

Domestic flights are early in the morning, so you will have the rest of the day for taking some rest and sightseeing around Ulgii town. Overnight with your host family. (L,D)

Day - 2

Day 2, Heading towards Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains

After breakfast we head towards Tavan Bogd Mt. Driving takes 6-7 hours due to road conditions. No paved road. Today we arrive at the entrance gate (north gate) to the Tavan Bogd National Park and overnight in tents or with a Kazakh family in ger. ( B,L,D)

Day - 3

Day 3, Hiking towards the ATB Base Camp

Today we do hiking towards Tavan Bogd base camp which is 20 km from the entrance gate.  Camel and a horseman will accompany the trek with our tents and foods loaded. We pitch up our tents at the Base Camp for the next couple of days stay. (B,L,D) 

Day - 4

Day 4, Climbing Malchin Peak

Today we do climb the Malchin Peak. This is a-non-technical-climbing without any speacial gears but good boots for slippery rocky non-technical-climbing. On the top of Malchin you will witness the beauty of Altai Mountain Ranges within Russian, Chinese and Mongolian territories. Climbing up and down would take 6-7 hours. We come back to the base camp for dinner and overnight in tents at the base camp. (B,L,D)

Day - 5

Day 5, Drive to Khoton Lake

Today we hike back to the north side entrane gate where we will see our driver and start driving from Tavan Bogd to Khoton Lake. Driving takes 7-8 hours due to road contidions. Therefore, it might be a long day to get back from base camp and drive to Khoton Lake. Therefore, we will stay overnight with a nomad family on the way to Khoton Lake. (B,L,D)

Day - 6

Day 6, Trekking around Khoton Lake

Today we will arrive at the Khoton Lake by the lunch. Set up our tents and do some fishing or trekking around the lake for the rest of the day. (B,L,D) 

Day - 7

Day 7, Trekking around Khoton lake, Turgen waterfall

Today we do full day trekking around Khoton Lake and to the Turgen Waterfall on the mountains. This full day trekking would offer you the possibility to discover the beauty of the national park and get to know the locals. Overnight in tents. (B,L,D) 

Day - 8

Day 8, Drive to Dayan Lake

Today we drive get to Dayan Lake which is located very close to the Chinese Border. This lake is rich for fish and a popular fishing destination. Upon arrival we set up our tents and you are free to do trekking, fishing, horse riding around the lake. (B,L,D)

Day - 9

Day 9, Drive back to Ulgii

Today afternoon. we will drive back to Ulgii from Dayan Lake. Driving would take 7-8 hours. Overnight in your host family or ger camp in Ulgii. (B,L,D)

International and domestic flight tickets, travel insurance, excess luggage fees on internal flights, meals not indicated in the itinerary, sleeping bags, drinks (except mineral water provided during the trip), gratuities. 


Although the Mongolian summers are hot and dry with occasional rain, the temperature can fluctuate as much 20 degrees centigrade between day and night. So be prepared for all weather conditions.
