Naadam, Gobi, Khuvsgul, Altai Tavan Bogd

Brief description

This is a-20-day tour tailored for those as a mix of hiking, climbing, horse riding and cultural taste in one basket. Mongolia's western frontiers with Russia and China are guarded by the snow capped peaks of the Altai Tavan Bogd mountain range, highest in the country. Its highest and most interesting peaks are Khuiten, Nairamdal, Malchin, Snowchurch and Ulgii. The longest glacier of Mongolia, the Potanin glacier stretches for 19km from the eastern face of Mt. Khuiten. On the summit day, when on the top of Khuiten, you will be able to glance into Russia and China. The local Tuvan herders acting as your camel caravan handlers and as porters will make an unforgettable company and share their culture and traditions with you.

Day 1, July 9, Arrive in UB

You will be met by a driver/guide at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2, July 10, Drive to Chinggis Khan Statue and Terelj National Park

Drive to Chinggis Khan Statue. Then drive to Terelj National park. Visit local nomad family and hike around the National Park or horse ride for a couple of hours. Drive back to UB for the night or stay overnight at the Terelj National Park and drive to UB early in the morning before the Naadam opening ceremony at 11 am.

Day 3, July 11, Naadam

Enjoy the opening ceremony of Naadam Festival and watch the first round of Mongolian Wrestling, then Archery and Ankle bone shooting competitions.

Day 4, July 12, Naadam

Today we drive to see the Mongolian horse racing which will take place out of the city. Then come to the Stadium to enjoy the final rounds of Mongolian wrestling.

Day 5, July 13, Fly to Gobi-Bayanzag

Today we visit the Bayanzag- the Flaming Cliffs alternatively by foot or car. Enjoy the wilderness and unique nature formations. Transfer to ger camp. Lunch, explore around for dinosaur remains and walking in the rich saxaul forest. You can even find real dinosaur bones and eggs yourself!

Day 9, July 17, Arkhangai

Drive through Tsetserleg, Arkhangai province center. Visit the local museum. Take a break for a meal and continue driving to Horgo extinct volcano and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake (spelled also Khorgo and white lake) It was established to project the spectacular mountain scenery and endangered species of flora & fauna. It's surrounded by the Khangai Mountains, which reach as 3000 meters above the sea level. Over comparatively small area here there are a dozen or so extinct volcanoes. We will ride horse here to explore big volcano crater area. White is a good spot for bird watching and photographing.

Day 10, July 18, Arkhangai

Drive through Tsetserleg, Arkhangai province center. Visit the local museum. Take a break for a meal and continue driving to Horgo extinct volcano and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake (spelled also Khorgo and white lake) It was established to project the spectacular mountain scenery and endangered species of flora & fauna. It's surrounded by the Khangai Mountains, which reach as 3000 meters above the sea level. Over comparatively small area here there are a dozen or so extinct volcanoes. We will ride horse here to explore big volcano crater area. White is a good spot for bird watching and photographing.

Day 11, July 19, Khuvsgul lake

We continue driving towards Murun, the center of Khuvsgul province. After arriving in Murun, if we arrive early we take a tea break and continue driving to Khuvsgul lake. Stay overnight by the lake and the following day we take a boat tour to see local reindeer in the deep taiga forest. Reindeer are herded for their antlers, a lucrative medicinal material as well as for their milk and meat. You have a chance to ride reindeer and take your memorable pictures.

Day 12, July 20, Khuvsgul lake

We continue driving towards Murun, the center of Khuvsgul province. After arriving in Murun, if we arrive early we take a tea break and continue driving to Khuvsgul lake. Stay overnight by the lake and the following day we take a boat tour to see local reindeer in the deep taiga forest. Reindeer are herded for their antlers, a lucrative medicinal material as well as for their milk and meat. You have a chance to ride reindeer and take your memorable pictures.

Day 13, July 21, Fly to UB

After enjoying the time by the Khuvsgul lake we drive back to Murun to take our flight to Ulaanbaatar.

Day 14, July 22, Fly to Ulgii/ Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd

Today we take an early morning flight to Ulgii, the center of Bayan-Ulgii province, westernmost province of Mongolia. As the flight arrives early in the morning we take a little break for some tea or nap and start driving towards Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain. Arrive at the entrance gate of the ATB National Park and overnight.

Day 15, July 23, Altai Tavan Bogd

Today we do hiking/horse ride towards the Base Camp of ATB Mountain. Our tents and luggage will be carried on the camels like the real nomads moving from one place to another. On the way we see the Potanin glacier. Arrive at the ATB Mountain Base Camp. Enjoy the view of Holy Five, the snowcapped, highest Peaks of Mongolia. Stay overnight at the Base Camp.

Day 16, July 24, Drive back to Ulgii

Today we come down from the Base Camp to the entrace gate where our car is waiting for us. Then drive back to Ulgii. We will visit an Eagle Hunter's family on the way to Ulgii and have some tea and a chat with the hunter. Arrive in Ulgii for the overnight.

Day 17, July 25, Fly to UB

Today we fly back to Ulgii after our Mongolia highlights journey. Do the last minute shopping.

Roundtrip domestic flights.

A local guide who speaks English, Kazakh and Mongolian and a cook will accompany you at all times. In addition, the services of the local herdsmen will be hired along with their animals. Mountain guide and porters. All of our stuff will be loaded on a camel or a horse depending on size.
